HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Marian
4 Humes of Chicago, who passed away on February 28, 2010; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Marian Humes was born on January 14, 1934, in
6 Chicago; her parents were the late Arlington and Malissa Humes;
7 she was a resident of Chicago her entire life; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Marian Humes attended Carver Elementary School
9 and Carver High School; she then went to Chicago Teachers
10 College, where she earned her bachelor's degree in education in
11 January of 1954; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Marian Humes had an outstanding career at Carver
13 and Cornell Elementary Schools from 1954 to 1974; she taught
14 remedial reading and math classes to children grades 3 through
15 8 and taught adult education classes and workshops; she also
16 served as Chairman of the 8th Grade Social Studies Department,
17 a Special Summer School Coordinator, a Group Guidance
18 Counselor, and an Educational Tour Leader to Washington, D.C.
19 and Springfield; and
 
20     WHEREAS, In 1974, Marian Humes began her career as a
21 Coordinator of Special Services with the Chicago Department of

1 Human Services; as Director, she was responsible for the
2 organization and implementation of Mayor Richard J. Daley's
3 City Camp and Youth Leadership programs and the development of
4 new resources by creating partnerships with churches, schools,
5 colleges, and universities; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Marian Humes was a member of numerous civic
7 organizations; she served as President of Project '75, a
8 national medical project that organized the Bufferin Campaign
9 to secure funding for black medical students; she was a member
10 and coordinator for the National Council of Negro Women; she
11 served as co-chairman of the Human Needs Task Force in 1976;
12 she was a member of the Chicago Bicentennial Committee and the
13 National League of Cities Finance Committee; she was a board
14 member of Ada S. McKinley Community Services; she was a member
15 of the Advisory Board at Jackson Park Hospital and a member of
16 the Women's Auxiliary at Provident Hospital; she was also a
17 member of the Theta Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha
18 Sorority, Inc.; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Marian Humes was a member of the 8th Ward
20 Democratic Organization and served as a Precinct Captain and
21 Treasurer for the Women's Auxiliary; she served as Director of
22 the 8th Ward Democratic Organization Remedial Reading and
23 Arithmetic Center; she was elected as an Alternate Delegate to
24 the National Democratic Nominating Committee in 1972, 1976, and

1 1980; she was a member of the 1976 National Democratic Platform
2 Committee and the committee's Platform Drafting Sub-Committee;
3 and
 
4     WHEREAS, In April of 1977, Marian Humes was appointed to
5 serve as Alderman of Chicago's 8th Ward to finish the unexpired
6 term of William Cousins; she was subsequently reelected to
7 serve 2 consecutive terms as alderman; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Marian Humes served with the Human Resources
9 Development Institute in many capacities until her retirement
10 in 2008 as Vice-President, Governmental Relations; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Marian Humes was nominated for the National
12 Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa's "Teacher of the Year" Award by
13 District 27 Superintendent Byron Minor; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Marian Humes is survived by her niece, Melissa
15 Duff Brown (Antonio); her nephew, Eugene Beckwith; her special
16 cousins, Jewel Parlan and Cheryl Wiggins; her devoted
17 health-care provider, Pamela Rogers; and her many loving
18 friends; therefore, be it
 
19     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
20 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
21 mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Marian

1 Humes; and be it further
 
2     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
3 presented to the family of Marian Humes as an expression of our
4 sympathy.
