HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake
3 destroyed the capital city of Port-au-Prince and several
4 regions of the impoverished country of Haiti; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Approximately 200,000 people lost their lives and
6 more than 1.5 million people are now homeless and without the
7 basic resources of food or clothing; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Prior to the earthquake, Haiti was still in the
9 process of recovering from a ruinous series of hurricanes and
10 tropical storms, food shortages, and rising commodity prices
11 and political instability; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Lawyers in the Chicago Community and beyond
13 organized swiftly to assist the people of Haiti in their time
14 of need to help alleviate the distress, hunger, and despair
15 resulting from the earthquake; and
 
16     WHEREAS, The Haitian American Lawyer's Association, Phi
17 Alpha Delta Fraternity-Chicago Alumni Chapter, and the Haitian
18 Congress to Fortify Haiti, together with distinguished
19 co-chairs from the public and private sector practice of law,
20 and members of the organized bar have united to form Lawyer's
21 United to Help Haiti Rebuild: A Call to Action; and

1     WHEREAS, Lawyer's United to Help Haiti Rebuild will host a
2 dinner on March 31, 2010 to provide financial, emotional, and
3 legal support for the Haitian people; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Lawyer's United to Help Haiti Rebuild issued a
5 call to action urging attorneys to devote their time, talent,
6 energy, and treasure to aid in the recovery, reconstruction,
7 and redevelopment efforts in Haiti by raising money to benefit
8 Partners in Health, World Vision, and a consortium of
9 Haitian-American organizations working to support specific
10 projects to provide aid to the Haitian people and assist in
11 reconstruction efforts; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Crucial emergency relief will require a sustained
13 and comprehensive effort to which Lawyer's United to Help Haiti
14 Rebuild are committed; therefore, be it
 
15     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
16 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
17 March 31, 2010 be designated Lawyer's United to Help Haiti
18 Rebuild: A Call to Action Day in the State of Illinois in honor
19 of the Haitian people and the relief efforts undertaken on
20 their behalf.
