HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Thomas T.S. Cheng,
4 director general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office
5 (TECO) in Chicago, on being named the Representative of the
6 Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Helsinki, Finland; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Mr. Cheng became the director general of
8 TECO-Chicago on August 5, 2003; he earned a B.A. degree from
9 National Chengchi University, an M.A. degree from National
10 Taiwan University, and an M.S. degree from the Edmund A. Walsh
11 School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University; and
 
12     WHEREAS, He joined the ROC Ministry of Foreign Affairs in
13 1971; he was secretary general of the Ministry of Foreign
14 Affairs before he came to Chicago; he also served as director
15 general of TECO in Boston and Toronto, Canada; and
 
16     WHEREAS, His duties in Chicago included promoting the
17 general relations, including those related to the economy,
18 culture, education, technology, and trade between Taiwan and
19 the midwest states and enhancing democracy and human rights;
20 and
 
21     WHEREAS, He also invited delegations of leaders from the

1 midwestern state legislatures to Taiwan; he organized an
2 agricultural goodwill delegation from Taiwan to visit
3 Illinois; he promoted the exchange of Chinese language
4 education; and he successfully earned the support of the State
5 of Illinois and the General Assembly; and
 
6     WHEREAS, He and his wife left Chicago on January 29, 2009
7 to begin his new post as the Representative of the Taipei
8 Economic and Cultural Office in Helsinki, Finland; therefore,
9 be it
 
10     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
11 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
12 again congratulate Thomas Cheng and wish him the best in his
13 future endeavors; and be it further
 
14     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15 presented to Thomas T.S. Cheng as a symbol of our respect and
16 esteem.
