HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Illinois Army National Guard Sergeant Gerrick D. Smith of Sullivan, who passed away on July 28, 2009 in Herat, Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, Sgt. Gerrick Smith was born on February 14, 1990 in Decatur; he was the son of Marilyn Smith and David Jones; and

WHEREAS, Sgt. Gerrick Smith was a 2008 graduate of Sullivan High School, where he participated in football, soccer, track, and the Sullivan Singers; and

WHEREAS, Gerrick joined the Illinois Army National Guard in his junior year of high school; he was mobilized for active duty in October of 2008; and

WHEREAS, Sgt. Gerrick Smith was a member of the Church of Christ and the Sullivan Boy Scout Troop #39; and

WHEREAS, Sgt. Gerrick Smith is survived by his mother and father, Marilyn Smith and David Jones; his sister, Seeley Smith; his maternal grandparents, Tom and Mary Smith; his paternal grandparents, Dale and Sharon Jones; his half-brother, Eric Jones; his nephew; his several aunts and uncles; and his many friends; and

WHEREAS, Sgt. Gerrick Smith's patriotism and courage will be remembered fondly by his loving family, his fellow soldiers, and the citizens of our grateful nation; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Illinois Army National Guard Sergeant Gerrick D. Smith; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Sgt. Gerrick Smith as an expression of our sympathy.
