HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Dorothy
4 Holley-Turner on receiving the 2009 Alumni of Color Award from
5 the School of Social Service Administration at the University
6 of Chicago; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy Holley-Turner is a native of Arkansas
8 and received a Bachelor of Arts from Roosevelt University in
9 Chicago; she completed her Masters level clinical training at
10 the School of Social Service Administration at the University
11 of Chicago and went on to attain her Doctorate of Education
12 with a focus on health education from Faith Grant College in
13 Birmingham, Alabama; and
 
14     WHEREAS, She is a founding member of the National
15 Association of Black Social Workers and an active member in the
16 Illinois chapter of the National Association of Social Workers,
17 serving as both the 1st Vice President and Treasurer in the
18 past; and
 
19     WHEREAS, She has taught at both the undergraduate and
20 graduate levels and has held a variety of positions in direct
21 service, child welfare, mental health, public health,
22 supervision, and management; she has served as a field

1 instructor to numerous School of Social Service Administration
2 students and mentored social workers promoting social justice
3 and change throughout the State of Illinois; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy Holley-Turner wrote the Child Welfare
5 laws for the Department of Children and Family Services while
6 working in Illinois State government; and
 
7     WHEREAS, She has served on many boards, including the
8 Chicago Board of Health, the Infant Mortality Board, and former
9 Mayor of Chicago Harold Washington's Youth Advisory Board; she
10 was appointed to the position of Director of Social Services in
11 the Chicago Department of Public Health under Chicago Mayor
12 Richard M. Daley and served until her retirement in 1996;
13 therefore, be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16 congratulate Dr. Dorothy Holley-Turner on receiving this
17 prestigious award and wish her the best in her future
18 endeavors; and be it further
 
19     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20 presented to Dr. Dorothy Holley-Turner as a symbol of our
21 respect and esteem.
