HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Lester E.
4 Smith; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Lester Smith was born on June 16, 1953 in Chicago;
6 he attended South Shore High School, where he was a letterman
7 in baseball, basketball, and football and graduated in 1971;
8 after graduation, he attended Northern Illinois University,
9 where he obtained a degree in political science in 1976; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Lester Smith began his professional career at
11 Cigna Insurance Company as an insurance adjuster; after several
12 years with Cigna, his leadership skills were recognized and he
13 was promoted to the position of supervisor; he left Cigna
14 shortly thereafter to take on a position with Insure One; for
15 the past ten years, he worked for the Office of the Special
16 Deputy Receiver, where he was affectionately known as "The
17 Mayor" due to his willingness to help others; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Lester Smith met the love of his life, Denise
19 Horton, in 1997; they became husband and wife on July 3, 1999;
20 and
 
21     WHEREAS, In 2002, Lester Smith became a member of the

1 Chesterfield Community Council, where he served as a board
2 member; he also served as the board's President for the past
3 four years; he was widely recognized for his leadership skills;
4 and
 
5     WHEREAS, Lester Smith professed his hope in Christ at an
6 early age; he was ordained as a deacon on November 16, 2008
7 under the leadership of Pastor Jennings of the New Life
8 Cathedral Church; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Lester Smith is survived by his wife, Denise
10 Horton-Smith; his mother, Corine Mills; his father, Robert L.
11 Smith; his sister, Lorraine Smith; his mother-in-law, Bessie
12 Horton; his nephews, Gerald and Brendon; and a host of other
13 relatives and friends; therefore, be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16 mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Lester
17 E. Smith; and be it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to the family of Lester E. Smith as an expression of
20 our sympathy.
