HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the Galesburg
4Lions Club members on the 90th anniversary of the organization;
5and
 
6    WHEREAS, On November 18, 1920, a charter was presented to
7the Galesburg Lions Club with Judge John F. Garner,
8International Director from Quincy, presiding; the Quincy
9Lions Club sponsored the Galesburg Lions Club, and Attorney L.
10Fred O'Brien was elected the first president; and
 
11    WHEREAS, With 37 men present, Galesburg became the 12th
12Lions Club organized in the State of Illinois, and the 109th
13Club in the Association; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The main goal of the Lions Club has been sight
15conservation for the past 65 years; the Galesburg Club
16responded to this ideal by purchasing eye glasses for school
17children, and later for people of all ages; over the years,
18thousands of pairs of glasses have been bought and distributed
19to those in need, with assistance by community optometrists and
20ophthamologists, who charge minimal fees, helping the Lions
21Club to continue this program; and

1    WHEREAS, The Galesburg Lions Club donated funds to local
2hospitals for eye equipment, hosting Glaucoma and Hearing
3clinics, and contributing to a foundation project to build an
4Eye Research Institute; and
 
5    WHEREAS, In 1922, the Lions Club donated suits of clothes
6to ex-servicemen coming out of the hospital; in 1940, the Lions
7Club began ringing bells for the Salvation Army, frequently
8raising the most money, and at times the most noise; and
 
9    WHEREAS, In 1925, the first road signs were placed to the
10entrances of Galesburg, acknowledging the Galesburg Lions
11Club; during World War II, the Lions Club helped man the
12Service Center each weekend; and in 1956 they built their first
13picnic shelter at Lake Storey; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Recent fundraising events include the
15presentation of a check for $5,000 to the City of Galesburg for
16the construction of hiking trails and a gift of $6,000 for the
17purchase of a scoreboard at the Little League Park at Hawthorne
18Center; and
 
19    WHEREAS, In the 1990s, the Lions Club welcomed women into
20their club; the women of Galesburg that have joined the Lions
21Club have served as chairs of many of the major committees and
22have participated in 100% of the activities; as the Club begins

1its 91st year in the community, they continue to donate, give
2of time and talent, and serve others rather then themselves;
3therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
5NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
6congratulate the members of the Galesburg Lions Club and wish
7them continued success in the future; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to the Galesburg Lions Club as a symbol of our
10respect and esteem.
