HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, This year, millions of school children around the world will benefit from D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), the highly acclaimed program that gives kids the skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence; and

WHEREAS, D.A.R.E. was founded in 1983 in Los Angeles; the program has proven so successful that it is now being implemented in 75% of our nation's school districts and in more than 43 countries around the world; and

WHEREAS, D.A.R.E. is a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives; and

WHEREAS, Illinois D.A.R.E. recently held a statewide design-a-poster contest with a drug-free theme; and

WHEREAS, Two fifth-grade students out of numerous entries from across the State of Illinois were declared the winners of the contest, Makenzie S. Williams from Galesburg and Nolan Byrd from Joliet; and

WHEREAS, All the D.A.R.E. Students across the State, along with the D.A.R.E. officers, are to be commended for choosing to be drug free; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Makenzie S. Williams and Nolan Byrd on the occasion of winning the Illinois D.A.R.E. design-a-poster contest and wish them continued success in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to Makenzie S. Williams and Nolan Byrd as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
