HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, In June of 2010, the international Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), with more than 30,000 members and 206 chapters worldwide, will celebrate 50 years of advancing ethical and effective fundraising; and

WHEREAS, AFP was founded in 1960; for 5 decades, AFP has worked to advance philanthropy and ethical fundraising and support charities around the world that provide critical services to their communities, including more than 1 million charities in the United States; and

WHEREAS, Fundraising and philanthropic efforts have helped drive meaningful advances in health, science, social services, and countless other fields that have improved the lives of millions of people in every conceivable way; and

WHEREAS, Annual charitable donations in the United States has risen from approximately $10 billion in 1960 to over $300 billion today; and

WHEREAS, AFP continues to promote ethical fundraising through its Code of Ethical Principles and Standards, which is now used by thousands of charities around the world as the foundation of their ethical fundraising work; and

WHEREAS, AFP works to increase donor confidence and public education about wise giving through The Donor Bill of Rights, The Accountable Nonprofit, and other resources; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the Association of Fundraising Professionals on the occasion of the association's 50th anniversary and applaud AFP's efforts to cultivate philanthropy and encourage charitable giving while promoting the highest ethical standards in the fundraising profession; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we call upon the people of Illinois to promote the spirit of philanthropy and observe the occasion by making a donation to a charitable organization; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Association of Fundraising Professionals as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
