HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate the University of Illinois at Springfield for hosting the American Political Science Association's 10th annual State Politics and Policy Conference and Professor Christopher Z. Mooney on the naming of the American Political Science Association's annual Best Dissertation in State Politics and Policy award in his honor; and

WHEREAS, On June 3 to 5, 2010, the University of Illinois at Springfield will host the 10th Annual State Politics and Policy Conference; the event is a major national conference, being the premier event of the year for political scientists studying state politics and policy; and

WHEREAS, The American Political Science Association announced that it is honoring University of Illinois at Springfield political science professor Christopher Z. Mooney by naming a national Ph.D. dissertation award in his honor; and

WHEREAS, Doctoral candidates worldwide can be nominated for the award in the category of Best Dissertation in State Politics and Policy and, beginning in 2010, the award will be given annually for the best Ph.D. dissertation in the field that is written in the previous calendar year at any university; and

WHEREAS, This award has been named in honor of Christopher Mooney in recognition of his founding of State Politics and Policy Quarterly, an academic journal that he edited from 2001 to 2007, and has served as business manager of since 2001; and

WHEREAS, Christopher Mooney was instrumental in founding the annual State Politics and Policy Conferences and has helped lead the recent resurgence in the study of comparative state politics in political science; and

WHEREAS, Christopher Mooney received considerable assistance from Barbara Ferrara of the University of Illinois at Springfield Center for State Policy and Leadership to organize the national conference and is a frequent panelist on State Week in Review for Illinois Public Radio; and

WHEREAS, Christopher Mooney has authored and edited numerous books and papers, and his edited volume, The Public Clash of Private Values: The Politics of Morality Policy

(2001), created a new area of inquiry within the field of policy research; and

WHEREAS, In 2006, Christopher Mooney received the University of Illinois at Springfield Faculty Excellence Award and is a member of numerous disciplinary associations and journal editorial boards; and

WHEREAS, Christopher Mooney currently resides in Rochester and attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, earning his Bachelors of Arts degree with honors in 1982, his Masters of Public Administration in 1985, his Masters of Arts in Political Science in 1987, and his Ph.D. in Political Science in 1990; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the University of Illinois at Springfield for hosting the American Political Science Association's 10th annual State Politics and Policy Conference and Professor Christopher Z. Mooney for the national recognition he so justly deserves as one of the nation's leading experts on state politics and policy; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Professor Christopher Z. Mooney as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
