HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Clifford
4 Lohs of Elgin, who passed away on May 10, 2010; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He was born and raised in Elgin; he started his
6 photography career with a 39-cent Univex camera and 10-cent
7 film rolls as a member of Elgin High School's camera club; and
 
8     WHEREAS, After graduation, he was hired by the Courier-News
9 in Elgin as an errand boy and was shooting photos for the
10 newspaper a year later; when he retired from the newspaper 45
11 years later, it ran a 4-page spread of his most memorable work,
12 which included photos of the warship on the Fox; the tower of
13 the Elgin National Watch Company toppling in 1966; floods,
14 snowstorms, and devastating fires across the area; and various
15 visiting celebrities and politicians; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Also among his memorable photos was one taken at
17 the liberation of the concentration camp near Dachau, Germany,
18 during World War II; he spent 3 years away from the newspaper
19 during the war, serving in the Air Force and later as
20 regimental photographer with the 22nd Infantry of the 42nd
21 (Rainbow) Division; and

1     WHEREAS, Clippings from old Courier-News articles recall
2 his election as commodore of the Lake Geneva Sailing Club in
3 Elgin in 1963 and his receipt of the Pioneer Medal award from
4 the Pioneer Memorial Foundation of Illinois in 1983; they also
5 note his vacation home in Door County, Wisconsin; and
 
6     WHEREAS, He and his wife, Peggy, were married 65 years and
7 had 3 children: Gary Lohs, Janet Lohs, and David Lohs;
8 therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
11 mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of
12 Clifford Lohs; and be it further
 
13     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14 presented to the family of Clifford Lohs as a symbol of our
15 sincere sympathy.
