HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dennis Schmidt on the occasion of the conclusion of his 35-year career as Police Chief of the Montgomery Police Department and for his new career as manager of Waubonsee Community College's driver safety program; and

WHEREAS, Dennis Schmidt is a native of Aurora; he earned his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Aurora University in May of 1983; and

WHEREAS, Dennis Schmidt began his career with the Montgomery Police Department in April of 1974, when he was hired as a patrol officer upon his discharge from the U.S. Army, where he had served as a medic; in 1978, he attained the rank of sergeant; in September of 1981, he was appointed to serve as police chief by the late Village President Stu Johnson; and

WHEREAS, During Dennis Schmidt's tenure, the Montgomery Police Department saw a period of steady growth, especially over the past decade; to accommodate the village's growing police department, Mr. Schmidt played a key role in the planning for a new police station on U.S. Route 30 at Griffin Drive; the facility, which was designed and sized to accommodate the village's future population growth, was dedicated in 2005; he has also served admirably as a leader during numerous emergencies in Montgomery, including the floods in the Parkview Estates Subdivision in 1972, 1983, and 1996; and

WHEREAS, Dennis Schmidt has been involved with numerous activities and fundraisers, including the Kane County Police Officer of the Year Banquet and Awards Ceremony, the Montgomery Festival, the Kane County 911 Board, and numerous charitable events and church activities; and

WHEREAS, Following his retirement from the Montgomery Police Department, Dennis Schmidt will serve as manager of the driver safety program at Waubonsee Community College, where his inspired leadership and experience will benefit the many instructors and students under his wing; and

WHEREAS, Dennis Schmidt serves as a model of hard work, integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of Illinois; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate and thank Dennis Schmidt for his many years of dedicated service with the Montgomery Police Department and wish him continued success in his new career; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Dennis Schmidt as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
