HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to honor the memory of Percy Baker
4 Jr. of Peoria for his many years of dedicated service to his
5 community; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Percy Baker Jr. worked at the Carver Center in
7 Peoria for 32 years, serving as director for 13 of those years;
8 during his tenure, he initiated programs such as the Toy Shoe
9 Drive, Biddy Basketball, the Carver Senior Club, the
10 After-School Program, Summer Camp, the center's Head Start
11 Program, Cocaine Anonymous, the IRS Tax Counseling Project, and
12 the Kings of Court; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Percy Baker Jr. passed away in 2008 after a
14 courageous battle against systolic heart failure; during his
15 battle, he became a spokesman for organ donation, helping to
16 encourage the African-American community to become organ
17 donors; and
 
18     WHEREAS, The Peoria Park Board renamed two city blocks of
19 Third Street in Peoria after Percy Baker Jr. in honor of his
20 many years to the Carver Center and to his community; and
 
21     WHEREAS, The naming of these city blocks in honor of Percy

1 Baker Jr. ensures that his legacy of compassion and generosity
2 will be fondly remembered for many generations to come;
3 therefore, be it
 
4     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
5 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
6 honor the memory of Percy Baker Jr. for his many years of
7 dedicated service to his community and congratulate his family
8 on the occasion of the naming of two city blocks of Third
9 Street in Peoria after him; and be it further
 
10     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11 presented to the family of Percy Baker Jr. as a symbol of our
12 esteem and respect.
