HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The State of Illinois is dedicated to providing
3 and preserving a healthy environment for the benefit of the
4 State's citizens and future generations; and
 
5     WHEREAS, The State recognizes that to maintain a healthy
6 environment each person must play a part in reducing his or her
7 carbon footprint; and
 
8     WHEREAS, One acre of certain trees may remove, over the
9 course of a year, as much as 2.6 tons of carbon dioxide from
10 the atmosphere, and one tree may absorb, during that same
11 period, as much carbon dioxide as some cars produce when driven
12 26,000 miles; and
 
13     WHEREAS, We recognize that, through actions and
14 educational programs, we can raise awareness about
15 environmental problems and make changes that will benefit the
16 environment as well as the well-being of the State's citizens;
17 therefore, be it
 
18     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
19 NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
20 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the date of
21 September 15th as Carbon Day in the State of Illinois in order

1 to raise awareness about the need for reducing the State's
2 carbon footprint; and be it further
 
3     RESOLVED, That we urge individuals, organizations,
4 schools, and communities to play a part in reducing the State's
5 carbon footprint by planting trees on that day and organizing
6 special programs to educate the State's citizens on steps that
7 can be taken to reduce carbon emissions.
