HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The State of Illinois is dedicated to providing and preserving a healthy environment for the benefit of the State's citizens and future generations; and

WHEREAS, The State recognizes that to maintain a healthy environment each person must play a part in reducing his or her carbon footprint; and

WHEREAS, One acre of certain trees may remove, over the course of a year, as much as 2.6 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and one tree may absorb, during that same period, as much carbon dioxide as some cars produce when driven 26,000 miles; and

WHEREAS, We recognize that, through actions and educational programs, we can raise awareness about environmental problems and make changes that will benefit the environment as well as the well-being of the State's citizens; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the date of September 15th as Carbon Day in the State of Illinois in order to raise awareness about the need for reducing the State's carbon footprint; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we urge individuals, organizations, schools, and communities to play a part in reducing the State's carbon footprint by planting trees on that day and organizing special programs to educate the State's citizens on steps that can be taken to reduce carbon emissions.
