SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 5/34-18.43 new

    Amends the Chicago School District Article of the School Code. Provides that a school board shall require that schools provide daily recess for all students in kindergarten through grade 8. Provides that recess must be at least 10 minutes in length and must occur once in the middle of each morning. Provides that if the principal determines that the weather is inclement, the principal shall direct that a recess be held indoors. Requires the principal to ensure that students are given the opportunity to engage in physical exercise during each recess. Provides that the time required for recesses is included in the minimum number of hours necessary to constitute a full day of attendance under the State aid formula provisions.

1     AN ACT concerning education.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section
5 34-18.43 as follows:
 
6     (105 ILCS 5/34-18.43 new)
7     Sec. 34-18.43. Recess required in elementary school. The
8 board shall require that schools provide daily recess for all
9 students in kindergarten through grade 8. A recess must be at
10 least 10 minutes in length. If the principal determines that
11 the weather is inclement, the principal shall direct that a
12 recess be held indoors. The principal shall ensure that
13 students are given the opportunity to engage in physical
14 exercise during each recess. The time required for recesses by
15 this Section is included in the minimum number of hours
16 necessary to constitute a full day of attendance under Section
17 18-8.05 of this Code.
