SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
20 ILCS 2805/35 new

    Amends the Department of Veterans Affairs Act. Provides that, subject to appropriations, the Department shall establish a program to make grants to entities for providing mental health and preventive health services, as well as assistance in obtaining other available services, using mobile units that travel to various locations to provide services, including local veterans organization facilities and facilities serving the homeless. Provides that services under the program shall target homeless veterans and other veterans facing obstacles to obtaining needed care or services, including those residing in rural and medically underserved areas. Effective immediately.

1     AN ACT concerning State government.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The Department of Veterans Affairs Act is
5 amended by adding Section 35 as follows:
 
6     (20 ILCS 2805/35 new)
7     Sec. 35. Mobile assistance units.
8     (a) Subject to appropriations, the Department shall
9 establish a program to make grants to entities for providing
10 mental health and preventive health services, as well as
11 assistance in obtaining other available services, using mobile
12 units as provided in this Section. The Department shall issue
13 requests for proposals to provide these services.
14     (b) The services provided under the program shall target
15 homeless veterans and other veterans facing obstacles to
16 obtaining needed care or services, including those residing in
17 rural and medically underserved areas. The mobile assistance
18 units shall travel to various locations to provide services,
19 including local veterans organization facilities and
20 facilities serving the homeless.
21     (c) Services provided through the mobile assistance units
22 may include, but need not be limited to, the following:
23         (1) Mental health screenings.

1         (2) Preventive health care.
2         (3) Crisis intervention.
3         (4) Assistance in accessing services provided through
4     the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs, the United
5     States Department of Veterans Affairs, or any other
6     federal, State, or local agency and services provided by
7     private organizations.
 
8     Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
9 becoming law.
