SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:

10 ILCS 5/25-8

Amends the Election Code. Provides that a gubernatorial appointment to fill a vacancy in the office of U.S. Senator is subject to the approval of a commission consisting of the legislative leaders and their appointees.

A BILL FOR

AN ACT concerning elections.

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly:

Section 5. The Election Code is amended by changing Section 25-8 as follows:

(10 ILCS 5/25-8) (from Ch. 46, par. 25-8)

Sec. 25-8. U.S. Senator.

(a) When a vacancy shall occur in the office of United States Senator from this state, the Governor shall make temporary appointment, subject to subsection (b), to fill such vacancy until the next election of representatives in Congress, at which time such vacancy shall be filled by election, and the senator so elected shall take office as soon thereafter as he shall receive his certificate of election.

(b) An appointment under subsection (a) is subject to approval by a majority vote of a commission consisting of the President and Minority Leader of the Senate, the Speaker and Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, and 16 members appointed 4 each by those legislative leaders.
