SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:

65 ILCS 5/11-40-3.2 new

Amends the Illinois Municipal Code. Provides that any municipality with under 15,000 inhabitants must allow persons with a valid driver's license to operate an electric vehicle on roadways under the municipality's jurisdiction. Provides that a municipality may impose a reasonable fee for registering electric vehicles.

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly:

Section 5. The Illinois Municipal Code is amended by adding Section 11-40-3.2 as follows:

(65 ILCS 5/11-40-3.2 new)

Sec. 11-40-3.2. Electric vehicles. Any municipality with under 15,000 inhabitants must allow persons with a valid driver's license to operate an electric vehicle on roadways under the municipality's jurisdiction. An eligible person must register his or her electric vehicle with the municipality. The municipality may impose a reasonable fee for registering any electric vehicle. For the purpose of this Section, "electric vehicle" means a self-propelled, electronically powered four-wheeled motor vehicle.
