SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the passing of our esteemed colleague, former Illinois State Senator John J. Nimrod, who passed away on January 4, 2009; and

WHEREAS, John Joseph Nimrod was born in the Lakeview district of Chicago on May 1, 1922; he was educated in Chicago public schools, and then attended the University of Illinois, the Illinois Institute of Technology, and Northwestern University; he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering in 1950; and

WHEREAS, John J. Nimrod was engaged in combat in World War II and the Korean Conflict for 6 years, first in Europe and then in the Far East; he graduated first in O.C.S. at Fort Benning, Georgia; for his service, he was awarded 6 Battle Stars, the Combat Infantryman Badge, a Bronze Star, and the Wahrung Korean Medal, the highest award given to a non-Korean civilian; he was honorably discharged from the service at the rank of Captain in 1952; and

WHEREAS, John J. Nimrod was employed as a consultant engineer and worked for General Motors and the president of a plastics firm in Barrington; and

WHEREAS, John J. Nimrod served with pride and distinction as an Illinois State Senator from 1973 to 1983, proudly serving the residents of the 4th Senate District; he served on various important standing committees, serving as the Minority Spokesman of the Public Health, Welfare, and Corrections Committee and as a member of the Revenue Committee and the Committee on Labor and Commerce; and

WHEREAS, John J. Nimrod served in numerous government positions, including assistant to the chairman of the Illinois Industrial Commission, Assistant Director in the Illinois Department of Revenue, Assistant to the President of the Cook County Board of Commissioners, Supervisor of Niles Township for 8 years, member of the Board of Directors of the Township Officials of Illinois, past President of the State Supervisors Division, the Auditor of Niles Township, past President of the State Auditors Division, past President of the Township Officials of Cook County, and as a Niles Township Republican committeeman; and

WHEREAS, John J. Nimrod served as the Chairman of the UNPO General Assembly in The Hague, Netherlands from 1992 to 2004 and as President of the UNPO Foundation USA in Washington, D.C. from 2000 to 2008; he also served as Secretary General of the Assyrian Universal Alliance from 1994 to 2005 and as President of the AUA Foundation from 1999 to 2008; and

WHEREAS, John J. Nimrod was a member of the Chicago Athletic Association, the Y.M.C.A., the Masons, the Shriners, the American Legion, and AMVETS; he was also a Past Director of the Skokie Civil Defense and an Elder in the Presbyterian Church; and

WHEREAS, John J. Nimrod is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ingeborg (Paul) Nimrod; his children, Lizbeth Nimrod, Naomi (Charlie) Dickinson, Joseph John (Lynn), and John Joseph; his grandchildren, Janet (Dickinson) Felton, Anna Dickinson, Loribeth Dickinson, John Paul Nimrod, Joseph Nimrod Jr., and Jack Nimrod; his great-grandchildren, Mya Nimrod, Thomas Nimrod, and Raymond Felton; he was the brother of the late Helen James Schwarten and Susie Badal and the beloved uncle of Ed (Jeannie) James, Ken (Connie) James, Joe (Pat) Nimrod, Dick (Jenne) Nimrod, and Charlotte Wynegar; he was the great uncle of Warren (Amy) James, Jerry (Kitty) James, Ann Harvey and Catherine King, Carl (Caroline) James, Merrily James, Melissa Richardson, Robert (Donna) Badal, and Herb (Carol) Badal; and

WHEREAS, John J. Nimrod will be remembered by his former colleagues in the Illinois Senate, his former constituents, and his loved ones as an honest, capable, and hard working legislator; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of our colleague, John Joseph Nimrod; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of John J. Nimrod as an expression of our sympathy.
