SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Dr. David B. Calandra of Hinsdale, who passed away on May 5, 2008; and

WHEREAS, He was born October 17, 1955; he graduated with a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Carthage College in 1977 and received his medical degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in 1980; he completed his residency in pathology at the University of Chicago Hospital in 1981; and after completing his residency in general surgery at Loyola in 1986, he became a fellow in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery; and

WHEREAS, He was an active member of the Adventist Hinsdale Hospital Department of Surgery since 1989; he taught at Loyola's Strich School of Medicine from 1988 to 1996, working his way from instructor to clinical assistant professor; he joined the University of Chicago Hospitals as an associate professor of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery in 1998 and worked there until March of 2003; and

WHEREAS, He was a participant in mission trips to Ecuador and Africa with others from the Adventist hospital system, to Ethiopia with Christ Church of Oak Brook, and to Lawndale with Christian Health Center and Church; and

WHEREAS, He was a member of the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery; he served as a committee member at Loyola, Good Samaritan, and Hinsdale hospitals; he served as a Robert Crown Center for Health Education board member from 1994 until his passing; he was also the regional director of the Rooney Heart Institute from 1993 to 2002; and

WHEREAS, He enjoyed golf, traveling, and cooking; he received many awards and recognition over the years; and he loved to share his thoughts and knowledge with others; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Calandra was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Joseph C. and Patricia Calandra; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Calandra is survived by his wife of 25 years, Marcia J., nee Huna; his children, Ashley, Nicole, Michelle, and Patricia; his siblings, Joseph (Mary), Susan (Tom) Sylvester, and Carolyn (Tom) Selsor; his father-in-law, Jack Huna, and his mother-in-law, Mary Huna; and his many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Dr. David Calandra; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. David B. Calandra as a symbol of our sincere sympathy.
