SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Herman L. Cornish of Peoria, who passed away on February 18, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Herman Cornish was born on May 16, 1933 in Peoria; his parents were William Harper and Clara Mae Thompson-Thomas Cornish; he married Dorothy Greene on April 16, 1960 in Peoria; and

WHEREAS, Herman Cornish served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict; and

WHEREAS, Herman Cornish was employed with the Peoria Police Department as a detective on the vice squad, serving from 1956 until his retirement in 1979 at the rank of sergeant; he was instrumental in the establishment of the Police-Community Relations Department, where the Officer Friendly Program was initiated; and

WHEREAS, After his retirement from the Peoria Police Department, Herman Cornish worked at Caterpillar Inc. as a security officer; he went on to serve as fire marshal at Methodist Medical Center; in 1989, he became the chief of police for the Peoria Park District, serving until his retirement in 1997; and

WHEREAS, Herman Cornish was the recipient of the Afro-American Police Award; he was also an inductee into the African-American Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, Herman Cornish was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church; and

WHEREAS, Herman Cornish was preceded in death by his parents; his sister; and his two brothers; and

WHEREAS, Herman Cornish is survived by his wife, Dr. Dorothy Cornish; his son, Kenneth (Veara) Cornish; his daughters, Janet (George) Davis and Kelly (Deron) Robbins; his 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; his sister, Mary Margaret Cornish; his brother, Loren (Frances) Cornish; and his many nieces and nephews; and

WHEREAS, Herman Cornish will be remembered by all who knew and loved him as a person with an uncanny sense of humor, who was well-loved and respected by all who knew him; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Herman Cornish; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Herman Cornish as an expression of our sympathy.
