SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Herman L. Cornish of Peoria, who passed
4 away on February 18, 2008; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Herman Cornish was born on May 16, 1933 in Peoria;
6 his parents were William Harper and Clara Mae Thompson-Thomas
7 Cornish; he married Dorothy Greene on April 16, 1960 in Peoria;
8 and
 
9     WHEREAS, Herman Cornish served in the United States Army
10 during the Korean Conflict; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Herman Cornish was employed with the Peoria Police
12 Department as a detective on the vice squad, serving from 1956
13 until his retirement in 1979 at the rank of sergeant; he was
14 instrumental in the establishment of the Police-Community
15 Relations Department, where the Officer Friendly Program was
16 initiated; and
 
17     WHEREAS, After his retirement from the Peoria Police
18 Department, Herman Cornish worked at Caterpillar Inc. as a
19 security officer; he went on to serve as fire marshal at
20 Methodist Medical Center; in 1989, he became the chief of
21 police for the Peoria Park District, serving until his

1 retirement in 1997; and
 
2     WHEREAS, Herman Cornish was the recipient of the
3 Afro-American Police Award; he was also an inductee into the
4 African-American Hall of Fame; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Herman Cornish was a member of St. Vincent de Paul
6 Catholic Church; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Herman Cornish was preceded in death by his
8 parents; his sister; and his two brothers; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Herman Cornish is survived by his wife, Dr.
10 Dorothy Cornish; his son, Kenneth (Veara) Cornish; his
11 daughters, Janet (George) Davis and Kelly (Deron) Robbins; his
12 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; his sister, Mary
13 Margaret Cornish; his brother, Loren (Frances) Cornish; and his
14 many nieces and nephews; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Herman Cornish will be remembered by all who knew
16 and loved him as a person with an uncanny sense of humor, who
17 was well-loved and respected by all who knew him; therefore, be
18 it
 
19     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
20 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with

1 his family and friends, the passing of Herman Cornish; and be
2 it further
 
3     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4 presented to the family of Herman Cornish as an expression of
5 our sympathy.
