SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans,
3 located in Wheaton, Illinois, has been established as an
4 Illinois not-for-profit corporation and has been designated a
5 501(c)(3) charitable organization by the U.S. Internal Revenue
6 Service; and
 
7     WHEREAS, The Midwest Shelter was officially opened on
8 January 20, 2007, and has been in continuous operation ever
9 since; and
 
10     WHEREAS, That organization's purpose is to provide
11 transitional services to homeless veterans of the United States
12 military so that they can return to useful and productive
13 lives; and
 
14     WHEREAS, The problems of veterans returning from Iraq and
15 Afghanistan continue to reveal serious problems of mental
16 illness, substance abuse, alcoholism, unemployment, and
17 homelessness; and
 
18     WHEREAS, There is an obvious and growing need for such a
19 facility for veterans returning from the conflicts in Iraq and
20 Afghanistan; and

1     WHEREAS, The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs in
2 the past has provided some funds to the Shelter from the
3 Illinois Veterans Assistance Fund; and
 
4     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate recognize that
5 the State has a major responsibility to its growing number of
6 veterans who have served, and will be serving, in the United
7 States military services; therefore, be it
 
8     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
9 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we strongly urge the
10 Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs to provide technical
11 and financial services to the Midwest Shelter for Homeless
12 Veterans so it can continue to provide needed services to
13 homeless veterans of the United States military as soon as
14 possible; and be it further
 
15     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 delivered to the Director of the Department of Veterans'
17 Affairs.
