SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Floyd Carroll; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Floyd Edward Carroll was born on March 8, 1927, in
5 Mobile, Alabama, the sixth of seven children of Katie Crenshaw
6 Carroll and Morgan Carroll; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Floyd Carroll's interest in music was cultivated
8 by his mother, who was a music teacher; she taught him to play
9 the violin at a very early age; Floyd enjoyed classical music,
10 jazz, and anthems; Floyd was a lifetime subscriber to the Lyric
11 Opera; Floyd taught his children to enjoy beautiful music and
12 the stories behind the music; Floyd Carroll was also an ardent
13 student of history; he was well versed in African and
14 African-American History and served as the chairman of the
15 Civil Rights Committee at Progressive Baptist Church during the
16 Martin Luther King, Jr. era; he was instrumental in convincing
17 the church members to participate in the Civil Rights Movement;
18 and
 
19     WHEREAS, Floyd Carroll graduated from Mobile's Dunbar High
20 School at the age of 17; he enlisted in the United States Navy
21 and served his country during World War II; after his honorable
22 discharge from the Navy he attended the University of Illinois

1 at Navy Pier; he continued his education at Wilson Jr. College
2 and Chicago Teachers College, where he earned his degree; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Floyd Carroll met his wife, Frances Graves, in
4 1953; they were joined together in Holy Matrimony on April 22,
5 1956; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Floyd Carroll was initiated into Alpha Phi Alpha
7 Fraternity in 1957; he was elected president of Theta Chapter
8 in 1959 and was a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha, celebrating
9 fifty years as an Alpha in March of 2007; he was active in the
10 church, beginning as a young child in the A.M.E. church where
11 he attended Sunday School with his mother; after his naval
12 service, he joined Cosmopolitan Community Church, where he sang
13 in the choir; he joined the Progressive Baptist Church and was
14 invited to join the Teacher Training Class; he taught in the
15 young adult department of the Sunday School for over fifteen
16 years and sang in the senior choir; in January of 1970 he and
17 his family united with the Greater Bethesda Baptist Church; he
18 was appointed to the Deacon Board in 1970 and remained a member
19 until his passing; and
 
20     WHEREAS, Floyd Carroll was employed by the United States
21 Postal Service; he retired from the United States Postal
22 Service in 1999; and

1     WHEREAS, The passing of Floyd Carroll will be deeply felt
2 by all those who knew and loved him, especially his wife,
3 Frances; his son, Floyd; his daughter, Francesca; his sisters,
4 Marjorie C. Maben, LaRose C. Cobb, and Katrice C. Patterson;
5 his nieces and nephews, Nicholas Maben, Margo Maben, Angela
6 Cobb, Bruce Cobb, Katrice Patterson, Paul Patterson, and David
7 Patterson; his five great-nieces and nephews; and his many
8 colleagues and friends; therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
10 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
11 his family and friends, the passing of Floyd Carroll; and be it
12 further
 
13     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14 presented to the family of Floyd Carroll as a symbol of our
15 sympathy.
