SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Reverend Roman Galiardi of Lisle,
4 Illinois, who passed away on November 26, 2006; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Stephen Galiardi was born in Cleveland, Ohio; he
6 attended St. Abbey's Benedictine High School; in 1948 he
7 enrolled at St. Procopius College in Lisle, where he was
8 manager of the football, basketball, and baseball teams, as
9 well as editor of the student newspaper; and
 
10     WHEREAS, He entered the monastic community in 1951 and
11 professed his vows six years later, taking the name Roman; and
 
12     WHEREAS, In 1959 Reverend Galiardi received a license in
13 canon law at Catholic University of America in Washington,
14 D.C.; he received a Master's degree in clinical psychology in
15 1960; in 1961 he received his doctorate in canon law at
16 Pontifical University of St. Thomas Auinas in Rome, Italy; and
 
17     WHEREAS, He returned to St. Procopius College, teaching
18 psychology at the college and canon law at the seminary; he
19 held other positions, including athletic director, dean of
20 admissions, and academic dean, before serving as president of
21 the college from 1965 to 1971; and

1     WHEREAS, Reverend Galiardi oversaw the change of direction
2 for the college, making it co-ed and changing its name to
3 Illinois Benedictine College; in 1996 it was renamed
4 Benedictine University; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Reverend Galiardi also served Sacred Heart
6 College in Wichita, Kansas as its president, St. Joan of Arc
7 Catholic Church in Lisle as its pastor for fifteen years, and
8 as prior, or leading assistant, at St. Procopius Abbey; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Reverend Galiardi is survived by his sisters, Jean
10 Antoskiewicz, Donna Escavage, and Rosalind Homolka; therefore,
11 be it
 
12     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
13 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we extend our
14 condolences to the family and friends of Reverend Roman
15 Galiardi; and be it further
 
16     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17 presented to the family of Reverend Galiardi.
