SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, An estimated 26,000 veterans will die in Illinois
3 in 2007, most of whom served during World War II and the Korean
4 Conflict and a growing number of whom served during the Vietnam
5 War; and
 
6     WHEREAS, These men and women served us so well in defending
7 and protecting our country; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Our veterans have made untold sacrifices so that
9 residents of Illinois and the nation may enjoy precious
10 freedoms; and
 
11     WHEREAS, The vast majority of veterans will die in the
12 community rather than in Veterans Affairs Medical Centers; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Many of our veterans have limited resources and
14 fragile support systems in the community, including elderly and
15 frail spouses, distant family members, and limited options for
16 supportive and comprehensive care at the end of life; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Combat veterans have unique needs related to the
18 war theater in which they served, the duties they performed,
19 and the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual injuries
20 they sustained; and

1     WHEREAS, These unique needs often go unrecognized and
2 untreated, causing veterans and their families unrelieved
3 anguish and pain; therefore, be it
 
4     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
5 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that on this Memorial Day,
6 May 28, 2007, we rededicate efforts to ensure that all veterans
7 and their families living in the State of Illinois have access
8 to excellent palliative and hospice care that meets their
9 special needs, honors them, and thanks them for their service
10 to our country.
