SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Mary A. Schickel of Loveland, Ohio, who
4 passed away on April 7, 2007; and
 
5     WHEREAS, She was born Mary Alice Frei, a daughter of a
6 family of German-American stained-glass artists, who grew up in
7 St. Louis, where her father, Emil Frei, immigrated from Munich,
8 Germany; the Frei family had been stained-glass artists there
9 for several generations; and
 
10     WHEREAS, As a young woman in the 1940s, she embraced the
11 Grail, an international women's movement that envisions a world
12 of peace, justice and renewal of the earth; she attended the
13 Grailville Year School of Apostolate and, after marrying
14 William Schickel in 1947, they moved to a farm in Loveland near
15 Grailville, the National Grail office; and
 
16     WHEREAS, In 1969, Mrs. Schickel and her husband purchased
17 and restored a B & O Railroad depot in Loveland that dated to
18 1907; they ran it as a community art center for a number of
19 years; their project was the beginning of the restoration of
20 historic Loveland; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Mrs. Schickel loved liturgical music and was a

1 vocalist; and
 
2     WHEREAS, The passing of Mary Schickel will be deeply felt
3 by all who knew and loved her, especially her husband, William;
4 her daughters, Martha Dorff, Anna (Illinois State Senator
5 William) Haine, Elizabeth Robinson, Mary Moorman, Ruth
6 Tabeling, and Joy France; her sons, Bill Schickel, John
7 Schickel, Joseph Schickel, Benedict Schickel, and Martin
8 Schickel; her brothers, Dr. Emil Frei and Robert Frei; her 32
9 grandchildren; and her 15 great-grandchildren; therefore, be
10 it
 
11     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
12 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
13 all her family and friends, the passing of Mary A. Schickel;
14 and be it further
 
15     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to the family of Mary A. Schickel as a symbol of our
17 sincere sympathy.
