SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Dr. Richard E. Coy of Glen Carbon, who
4 passed away on March 13, 2007; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Richard Coy was born October 28, 1925, in New
6 Kensington, Pennsylvania, to Cristy and Elizabeth Hill-Coy; he
7 married Grace McKallip on September 7, 1957, and they
8 celebrated 49 years of marriage; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Richard Coy started his armed forces career on the
10 USS Currituck AV-7 for the United States Navy serving from 1943
11 until 1945 as a hospital corpsman; he returned to the Navy in
12 1950 after completing his education in dentistry and served as
13 a dental officer at the United States Naval Hospital in
14 Yokosuka, Japan, until 1953; he earned his bachelor of science
15 degree, D.D. S. degree, and masters degree at the University of
16 Pittsburgh Dental School; and
 
17     WHEREAS, As a dentist, Dr. Coy maintained a private
18 practice in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, and taught at the
19 University of Pittsburgh Dental School until 1970, where he was
20 an associate professor; he moved to Edwardsville, where he was
21 instrumental in developing the dental program at the Southern
22 Illinois University School of Dental Medicine; in 1985 he

1 retired as the assistant dean of the dental school and
2 professor emeritus; and
 
3     WHEREAS, Dr. Coy was professor and head of removal
4 prosthodontics at Washington University School of Dentistry in
5 St. Louis from 1985 until 1988; he maintained his private
6 practice in Belleville until 2001; he lectured nationally and
7 internationally for post-graduate and continuing education
8 programs; he published dozens of articles in dental journals
9 and was editor for many textbooks; he was a member of numerous
10 professional organizations, including the American Dental
11 Association, where he was vice chairman of the Council of
12 Dental Materials; the American College of Prosthodontics; the
13 American Equilibration Society, where he was president from
14 1985 until 1986; and the American Cleft Palate Association; he
15 was also a Missouri Dental Specialty Board examiner; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Dr. Coy's fraternal memberships included Ancient
17 Free and Accepted Masons of Illinois, American Legion Post 199
18 of Edwardsville, and the academic fraternity Omicron Kappa
19 Upsilon; Dr. Coy was an avid fan of music, especially jazz; he
20 donated his collection of more than 68,000 albums and 2,500
21 compact discs to the Bloomington Symphony in Indianapolis; and
 
22     WHEREAS, In addition to his wife, Dr. Coy is survived by
23 his daughter, Beth Coy-Abbott, and her husband, Bryan, and

1 their children, Katheryn and James; his son, Richard C. Coy,
2 and his wife, Terry, and their children, Sara, Brandon and
3 Taylor; he was preceded in death by his parents; his brother,
4 Clark; and his sister, Ruth Wilson; therefore, be it
 
5     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
6 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
7 his family and friends, the passing of Dr. Richard Coy; and be
8 it further
 
9     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to the family of Dr. Richard Coy as a symbol of our
11 sympathy.
