HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Healthy kidneys are essential to regulate the
3 body, to remove fluids, waste, toxins, and drugs introduced to
4 the body, to release hormones that regulate blood pressure, to
5 make red blood cells, and to promote strong bones; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Chronic kidney disease permanently damages the
7 kidneys and prevents them from carrying out necessary functions
8 that keep the body healthy; when undetected, chronic kidney
9 disease can lead to kidney failure, which can only be treated
10 with lifelong dialysis or a kidney transplant; and
 
11     WHEREAS, More that 650,000 Illinoisans, about one in nine
12 adults, suffer from chronic kidney disease; and
 
13     WHEREAS, The two main causes of chronic kidney disease are
14 diabetes and high blood pressure, which are responsible for up
15 to two-thirds of the cases; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Scientific evidence has also shown that obesity
17 triples the risk of developing chronic kidney disease; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Family history and ethnicity serve as additional
19 risks for developing chronic kidney disease; African
20 Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, and Native Americans

1 have a greater risk of developing chronic kidney disease; and
 
2     WHEREAS, The cost of treatment for kidney disease patients
3 is disproportionately higher than that for any other chronic
4 disease; estimates show that the annual cost of treating kidney
5 failure in the United States is expected to increase from $16
6 billion per year in 2007 to $38 billion by 2010; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Early detection methods, including regular
8 reporting of glomerular filtration rate, which is currently the
9 indication of kidney disease staging, can help prevent the
10 progression of kidney disease to kidney failure; therefore, be
11 it
 
12     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14 the General Assembly strongly encourages care providers,
15 consumer advocates, patient groups, and other stakeholders
16 throughout the State to work collaboratively in the fight
17 against chronic kidney disease; and be it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That the month of March be designated as Chronic
19 Kidney Disease Awareness month in the State of Illinois, and
20 that citizens be encouraged to become aware of the causes of
21 chronic kidney disease, its risk factors, and its contributing
22 health problems during that month; and be it further

1     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be given
2 to the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois and the Illinois
3 Department of Public Health.
