HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate the congregation
4 of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Olney on the occasion of
5 the church's 150th anniversary; and
 
6     WHEREAS, St. Joseph Catholic Church was started in 1857,
7 when a group of parishioners met at the home of Peter McDonald
8 Jr. at 122 West North Avenue in Olney; and
 
9     WHEREAS, In 1861, St. Joseph Catholic Church's first
10 building was built at the corner of North Fair and East Butler
11 in Olney; in 1892, St. Joseph Catholic Church was moved to its
12 present location at the corner of South Elliott and East
13 Chestnut Streets; and
 
14     WHEREAS, In 1907, the congregation of St. Joseph Catholic
15 Church built a Catholic school, with the first day of school
16 starting in January of 1908; the church vacated the old church
17 building and held Mass in the school until 1938, when the
18 current church building was erected; and
 
19     WHEREAS, On April 22, 1953, the St. Joseph Catholic Church
20 congregation bought the C.P. Porter property south of the
21 church in order to build a convent for the church's nuns; in

1 1957, construction began on the church's Parish Center, which
2 houses the school's gymnasium and cafeteria; and
 
3     WHEREAS, In 1961, the property located at 215 South Elliott
4 in Olney was acquired by St. Joseph Catholic Church to be used
5 as a new rectory for the parish's priest; and
 
6     WHEREAS, St. Joseph Catholic Church's new Multi-Purpose
7 Center was built in August of 1997; the church's newest
8 addition contains meeting rooms, offices, additional
9 classrooms, an all-purpose room, kitchen, and school and church
10 offices; and
 
11     WHEREAS, The congregation has held many activities in
12 celebration of St. Joseph Catholic Church's 150th anniversary,
13 including a Day of Remembering, a Memorial Day Mass at the
14 Catholic cemetery, a parish picnic, and a visit from the Bishop
15 of Belleville; the celebration will conclude with the burial of
16 a time capsule in January of 2008; therefore, be it
 
17     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
19 congratulate the congregation of the St. Joseph Catholic Church
20 on the occasion of the church's 150th anniversary and wish them
21 continued success and happiness in the future; and be it
22 further

2 presented to a representative of the St. Joseph Catholic Church
3 as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
