HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Dharmapuri
4 Vidyasagar on his retirement from the University of
5 Illinois-Chicago; and
 
6     WHEREAS, In 1971 Dr. Vidyasagar established the first
7 neonatal intensive care unit with ventilator support in the
8 State of Illinois at Cook County Hospital; he went on to found
9 the Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at the University
10 of Illinois at Chicago, which has provided an underserved
11 community with world-class emergency care for newborns for over
12 three decades; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Dr. Vidyasagar effected the regionalization of
14 perinatal care in the 1970s and 1980s, resulting in improved
15 perinatal care throughout the Midwestern United States; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Dr. Vidyasagar's numerous contributions to
17 research on surfactant usage and meconium aspiration syndrome
18 have been integral to the advance of treatment in neonatal
19 pulmonary care over the past quarter century; and
 
20     WHEREAS, Dr. Vidyasagar established an accredited training
21 program in neonatal and perinatal medicine and has trained over

1 70 neonatologists currently providing care around the world;
2 Dr. Vidyasagar has made it his mission to help reduce neonatal
3 and infant mortality through transfer of technology to
4 developing countries; he has conducted training sessions and
5 provided free consultations on the establishment of modern
6 neonatal intensive care units in nations around the globe
7 including China, India, Poland, Lithuania, Uzbekistan, and
8 many others; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Dr. Vidyasagar was hired by the University of
10 Illinois-Chicago in 1974 to establish the Neonatal Intensive
11 Care Unit at the University of Illinois-Chicago; he became a
12 full Professor in 1977; he served as head of the Division of
13 Neonatology for thirty-two years and continues to serve as the
14 director of the Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Program; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Dr. Vidyasagar and his wife have three grown
16 children; his retirement celebration will be held on November
17 2, 2007; therefore, be it
 
18     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
19 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
20 congratulate Dr. Dharmapuri Vidyasagar on his retirement and
21 wish him the best in his future endeavors; and be it further
 
22     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
