HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Rabbi Harvey and Vivien Well and Mr. Lawrence A. Sherman on being the honorees at the 2007 Keter Award Banquet of the Associated Talmud Torahs of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, The 2007 Keter Award Banquet of the Associated Talmud Torahs of Chicago will take place on Sunday, November 18, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Rabbi Well is retiring after serving as the Superintendent of the Associated Talmud Torahs for 30 years; his innovative educational and leadership skills have led the Associated Talmud Torahs to succeed and grow as the Central Agency for Torah Education in Chicago; he is a graduate of the Chicago day school system and Roosevelt University; he received his S'micha from the Hebrew Theological College and his PhD from Loyola University; and

WHEREAS, Rabbi Well has taught at the Jewish University, at Loyola University, and the Ida Crown Jewish Academy; he previously served as Principal at Akiba Schecter Day School and the interim Principal at the Ida Crown Jewish Academy; some of the innovative programs instituted during his tenure include: the Oscar and Bernice Novick P'tach Program for children with learning disabilities, the Associated Talmud Torahs Frankel Teacher's Resource Center, the Goldman Computer Department, and many other programs that serve the entire Jewish Community of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Vivien Well has been a true partner in all of Rabbi Well's endeavors; she is also an alumna of the Chicago day school system and is an active participant in AMIT, the Skokie mikvah, and the Associated Talmud Torahs; Vivien has taught at P'tach and Arie Crown Hebrew Day School and is currently the graphic artist at the Associated Talmud Torahs Frankel Teacher's Resource Center; Rabbi and Mrs. Well will be honored with the inaugural ATT Jewish Educational Leadership Award; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Lawrence A. Sherman is the Chairman and founder of Puritan Finance Corporation; he is a life-long supporter of Jewish Education and Jewish causes in Chicago, Israel, and around the world; he is currently on the Board of Overseers of the Hebrew Union College and he has been a leader in Reform Judaism for many years; he served for many years on the Board of Directors of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, including four years as the Chairman of the Jewish Education Committee; he is a true friend of the Associated Talmud Torahs and is being honored with the Reuben and Francis L. Feinberg Memorial Crown for Community Service in appreciation of his many years of supporting Jewish education; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Rabbi Well, Mrs. Vivien Well, and Mr. Lawrence Sherman on receiving these great honors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be presented to Rabbi Well, Mrs. Vivien Well, and Mr. Lawrence Sherman as symbols of our respect and esteem.
