HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives congratulate Nada Stotland, M.D., M.P.H. for her ascension to the post of president-elect of the American Psychiatric Association; and

WHEREAS, A professor of psychiatry and obstetrics/gynecology at Rush Medical College, Dr. Stotland will serve as president-elect for one year and then will take the reins of the Association as president in May of 2008; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Stotland has held a wide range of leadership positions within the American Psychiatric Association, including terms as vice president and secretary-treasurer on its Board of Trustees, speaker of the Assembly and chair of both the Committee on Women, and the Joint Commission on Public Affairs; she has also been president of other distinguished health organizations, including the Illinois Psychiatric Society, the Association of Women Psychiatrists, and the North American Society for Psychosocial Obstetrics and Gynecology; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Stotland serves on the boards of Mental Health America, a consumer and family advocacy group, and Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health; she is the author or editor of seven books and over seventy articles and has won a number of awards, including the APA's Francis Braceland and Alexandra Symonds Awards and the American Medical Women's Association's Lila Wallis Award; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Stotland is a noted authority on women's mental health and has appeared on "Oprah", "Larry King Live", and CNN's "Talk Back Live"; she has also testified before both chambers of Congress and the federal Food and Drug Administration; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Stotland received her undergraduate, medical, and residency education at the University of Chicago and was a faculty member for more than 10 years, serving as the director of the Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison Service and the director of Psychiatric Education; she later served as medical coordinator for the State of Illinois Division of Mental Health and as the chair of psychiatry at the Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Nada Stotland, a long-time resident of the Hyde Park neighborhood in Chicago, is married to Harold Stotland, a highly respected lawyer; they have four grown children, Leah, Naomi, Eve, and Hannah; from time to time she has volunteered her lovely voice and superior acting skills to the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company Inc. in Chicago; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Nada Stotland, M.D., M.P.H. on her position as president-elect of the American Psychiatric Association; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Nada Stotland and to the American Psychiatric Association as a symbol of our respect.
