| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, There are thousands of public, academic, school, | | 3 |
| governmental, and specialized libraries in the United States | | 4 |
| and the State of Illinois that provide excellent and invaluable | | 5 |
| service to library users regardless of age, ethnicity, or | | 6 |
| socioeconomic background; and
| | 7 |
| WHEREAS, Libraries provide millions of people with the | | 8 |
| knowledge and information they need to live, learn, and work in | | 9 |
| the 21st Century; and
| | 10 |
| WHEREAS, Librarians and library support staff bring the | | 11 |
| nation a world of knowledge in person and online, as well as | | 12 |
| personal service and expert assistance in finding what is | | 13 |
| needed when it is needed; and
| | 14 |
| WHEREAS, It is important to recognize the unique | | 15 |
| contributions of all library workers and the value to | | 16 |
| individuals and society of those contributions;
and
| | 17 |
| WHEREAS, A steady stream of recruits to library work is | | 18 |
| necessary to maintain the vitality of library services in | | 19 |
| today's information society; and
| | 20 |
| WHEREAS,

| brought to the table at public policy discussions on key | | 2 |
| issues, such as intellectual freedom, equity of access, and | | 3 |
| narrowing the digital divide; and

| WHEREAS, The funding of libraries and salaries for library | | 5 |
| workers must be increased to attract more talented people to | | 6 |
| work in our nation's libraries and to ensure that these vital | | 7 |
| services are delivered each day;
and
| | 8 |
| WHEREAS, Libraries, library workers, and library | | 9 |
| supporters across America are celebrating National Library | | 10 |
| Workers Day sponsored by the American Library | | 11 |
| Association-Allied Professional Association (ALA-APA); | | 12 |
| therefore, be it
| | 13 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | | 14 |
| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | | 15 |
| the Illinois House of Representatives proclaims April 17, 2007, | | 16 |
| as Library Workers Day in the State of Illinois and encourages | | 17 |
| Illinoisans to take advantage of the variety of library | | 18 |
| resources available, and we thank library workers for their | | 19 |
| exceptional contributions to American life.
