HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives wish to extend their condolences to the family
4 and friends of Phyllis Sutker of Skokie, who passed away on
5 November 13, 2006; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Phyllis Sutker was born in Chicago; she graduated
7 from Austin High School and Wright Junior College before
8 receiving her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in social work
9 from the University of Chicago; she was a member of Phi Beta
10 Kappa; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Mrs. Sutker met her husband Calvin during their
12 senior year of high school, and they were married in 1946; they
13 moved to Skokie in 1958; and
 
14     WHEREAS, In the 1950s, Mrs. Sutker joined NA'AMAT, which
15 supports women's and children's issues in Israel; she went on
16 to become its national president between 1981 and 1985; at the
17 time of her passing she was a member of the NA'AMAT USA
18 advisory board and of its Chicago Council; she represented the
19 group in the Labor Zionist Movement and on committees and
20 boards of the major Jewish organizations in Chicago; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Mrs. Sutker was deeply involved in the Zionist

1 movement; she was a national vice president of the American
2 Zionist Movement and served on its Chicago region board; she
3 also served as an elected member of the executive of the World
4 Zionist Organization in the 1980s and 1990s and was elected as
5 one of its honorary fellows in 1997; she was on the Board of
6 Governors of the Jewish Agency between 1983 and 1992; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Mrs. Sutker was an elected member of the Executive
8 (American Section) of the World Zionist Executive and the Board
9 of Governors of the Jewish Agency; she was a delegate to six
10 World Zionist Congresses; and she was a national vice president
11 of the American Zionist Movement and on the board of the
12 American Zionist Movement, Chicago region; and
 
13     WHEREAS, As national president of NA'AMAT USA, Phyllis
14 Sutker met and worked with many Israeli officials; she was a
15 friend of Leah Rabin, wife of former Prime Minister Yitzhak
16 Rabin, and worked closely with former Prime Minister Shimon
17 Peres; Uzi Narkiss, the Israeli general who liberated Jerusalem
18 in the 1967 war, was a personal friend who came to Chicago to
19 give the keynote address when Phyllis was honored by the Labor
20 Zionist Alliance of Chicago (now called Ameinu) in 1997; and
 
21     WHEREAS, In 2005, Phyllis was honored by the Greater
22 Chicago Council of NA'AMAT on the occasion of the
23 organization's 80th anniversary; she and her husband, Calvin R.

1 Sutker, were honored by the American Zionist Movement in 2002;
2 in 1996, Phyllis was elected a lifetime Honorary Fellow of the
3 World Zionist Organization; she was honored by Israel Bonds of
4 Chicago as a "Woman of Achievement" in 1988; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Phyllis Sutker was preceded in death by her son,
6 Edward, and her brother, David; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Phyllis Sutker was the beloved wife of former
8 State Representative Calvin R. Sutker; the devoted mother of
9 Sharon Sutker McGowan (Jim McGowan), Shelley Sutker-Dermer
10 (Kenneth Dermer), Edie Sue Sutker (fiance, David Richmond), and
11 Allen (Karen) Sutker; the loving grandmother of Jennifer and
12 Joshua McGowan, Elana and Jake Dermer, and Danielle, Nicole,
13 Tommy, and Teddy Sutker; the beloved sister-in-law of Marsha
14 Kline, Irwin (Carla) Sutker, and Ada (Beryl) Rabinowitz; the
15 step-sister of Lloyd (Grace) Kline; and is fondly remembered by
16 many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; therefore, be it
 
17     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
19 mourn, along with her family and friends, the death of Phyllis
20 Sutker; and be it further
 
21     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22 presented to the family of Phyllis Sutker, as an expression of
