HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate the City of Elmhurst on the 50th anniversary of the Elmhurst Historical Museum, January 13, 2007; and

WHEREAS, The Elmhurst Historical Museum is operated by the City of Elmhurst, and serves as the community's memory by acquiring, preserving, and interpreting original materials related to the history of Elmhurst from the settlement period to the present; and

WHEREAS, The Elmhurst Historical Museum was founded in 1957, and is located in a historically significant structure, the former home of Henry L. Glos, first Village President, and his wife, Lucy; the museum fills an essential role in the life of the community, revealing the quality of life in years past and providing a basis on which pride in Elmhurst will grow and endure; and

WHEREAS, The Museum fulfills its mission by acquiring and caring for locally significant artifacts, records and documents, photographs, audio-visual materials, and publications; presenting historical concepts and museum collections to the public through exhibits, educational programs, tours and publications; supporting research related to local history and Museum collections; and offering cultural and leisure opportunities related to community history and heritage; and

WHEREAS, Services at the Museum include a permanent collection of historical artifacts numbering 7,000; a permanent collection of historic photographic images numbering 10,000; more than 300 linear feet of personal, business, and City records; a library of more than 500 books; and microfilm copies of Elmhurst newspapers, censuses, and Sanborn Fire Insurance maps; and

WHEREAS, The Museum's exhibits include a permanent exhibit examining Elmhurst as a model of suburbanization, temporary exhibits developed from the museum collection, and travelling exhibits from outside sources; educational programs are offered to adults, families, schools, and special audiences that include, but are not limited to, gallery tours, craft demonstrations, classroom visits, walking tours of Elmhurst neighborhoods, holiday programs, lectures, and symposia; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the City of Elmhurst on the 50th anniversary of the Elmhurst Historical Museum; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the City of Elmhurst and the Elmhurst Historical Museum.
