HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to designate days in the State of Illinois to help our citizens learn more about pressing issues that effect the State; and

WHEREAS, October 27, 2008 is the first day of Red Ribbon Week, the flagship awareness initiative of the National Family Partnership's Red Ribbon Campaign, the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation; and

WHEREAS, "Lock Your Meds Day" is a targeted call to action for parents, asking them to take a five-part pledge to prevent children's prescription drug abuse; and

WHEREAS, "Lock Your Meds Day" encourages parents to talk to their children about the dangers of taking medications without a prescription, setting clear rules about not sharing medicine and using medication only as prescribed, locking up medicine to prevent children and guests from accessing it, taking stock of our medicine and regularly checking to see that nothing is missing, and encouraging family and friends to follow the same guidelines to keep children safe from prescription drugs; and

WHEREAS, Statistics show that more than 3.1 million teens report abusing prescription drugs; everyday, 3,300 more children begin experimenting with prescription drugs; and 70% of children who abuse prescription drugs admit to getting them from family or friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we designate October 27, 2008 as "Lock Your Meds Day" in the State of Illinois; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the National Family Partnership as a symbol of our respect.
