HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The Golconda Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center is part of the Job Corps of the United States Department of Labor which prepares young adults, ages 16 through 24, for successful careers through a career training approach which integrates the teaching of academic, vocational, employability skills, and social competencies through a combination of classroom, practical, and vocational learning experiences to prepare youth for stable, long-term, high-paying jobs or further education; and

WHEREAS, The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a work relief program for young people from unemployed families, established in March 1933, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, that enhanced natural resources, managed forests, and built parks and public facilities still in use today; and

WHEREAS, Golconda was the site of a National Forest Civilian Conservation Corps camp in 1933; and

WHEREAS, Although the goals of the Golconda CCC Camp and the Golconda Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center are not identical, both advanced young people by teaching valuable job skills; and

WHEREAS, Today the Golconda Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center enrolls 230 resident students and equips its graduates to have careers as bricklayers, carpenters, electricians, painters, or welders, or to work in the fields of building and apartment maintenance, culinary arts, business, or urban forestry; and

WHEREAS, It has come to our attention that the Golconda Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center on July 25, 2008, in conjunction with its graduation ceremony commemorated the 75th anniversary of the creation of the Civilian Conservation Corps; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we commend the Golconda Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center on its service to young adults and salute its commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the creation of the Civilian Conservation Corps; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Golconda Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center as an expression of our high esteem.
