HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are proud to express their support for the Town of Cicero's "Ceasefire Week", to be held during the week of June 22-27, 2008; and

WHEREAS, CeaseFire is an initiative of the Chicago Project for Violence Prevention; the initiative is a strategic public health effort to reverse the violence epidemic using highly trained street outreach staff, public education campaigns, and community mobilization and is run by Corazon Community Services in Cicero; and

WHEREAS, CeaseFire is committed to making a difference in the lives of youth, families, and the general community in Cicero; Corazon Community Services annually serves approximately 1,000 young people through their programs and services, with approximately 45% of their employees consisting of local youth from the community; and

WHEREAS, Corazon Community Services, in collaboration with the Town of Cicero, community based organizations, and churches, has introduced "Ceasefire Week" in Cicero in order to involve youth, parents, churches, law enforcement, local elected officials, and other community based organizations and businesses to connect and kick off the summer with peace and non-violence; and

WHEREAS, Last year thousands of young people and their families participated in the week long events of "Ceasefire Week"; for the 2008 celebration, Corazon plans to have soccer tournaments at their new soccer field, volleyball games at Morton East, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament at Cicero Stadium, softball games at Kolar Field, community murals, and a peace march and youth concert; and

WHEREAS, Corazon Community Services, the Town of Cicero, and the numerous community organizations involved with "Ceasefire Week" are to be commended for their work with the children of Cicero and for spreading the message of non-violence to all; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we express our support for the Town of Cicero's "Ceasefire Week" and wish the event organizers and participants success and happiness during their festivities; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Cicero Town President Larry Dominick and a representative of Corazon Community Services as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
