HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate the citizens of
4 Murrayville as they celebrate the sesquicentennial of their
5 community; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Murrayville was named after Mr. Samuel Murray; the
7 Murray family came to America in 1835, and after living three
8 years in Pennsylvania came to Illinois, taking five months to
9 make the journey; they settled in Morgan County where
10 Murrayville now stands; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Under Mr. Murray's supervision, the town was
12 surveyed and platted out on January 5, 1858; it was at this
13 time that the town was named Murrayville; and
 
14     WHEREAS, In 1863, an effort was made to change the name of
15 the town to Itan and it was known by that name for some time,
16 but because it was better known as Murrayville, it went back to
17 that name; and
 
18     WHEREAS, The Chicago and Alton Railroad began to operate
19 through the community in 1858, which encouraged the building of
20 more homes and businesses; and

1     WHEREAS, In June of 2008, the citizens of Murrayville will
2 celebrate 150 years as a community "dedicated to each other and
3 ready to help in time of need"; therefore, be it
 
4     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
5 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
6 congratulate the citizens of Murrayville as they celebrate the
7 sesquicentennial of the community and wish them the best for
8 the future; and be it further
 
9     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to James Lonergan, Village Board President of
11 Murrayville, as a symbol of our respect.
