HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Aurora Police Chief Bill Powell on his retirement, April 14, 2008; and

WHEREAS, A Chicago native, Bill Powell joined the Aurora department in December 1977; he was promoted to sergeant in 1993, lieutenant in 2000, and commander in 2005; and

WHEREAS, He worked as a patrolman in the community for twelve years; he was assigned to specialized units for nine years; and he supervised special operations groups; and

WHEREAS, He was both the first African-American sergeant and the first African-American lieutenant in the Aurora Police Department; and

WHEREAS, He is a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving during the Vietnam era; and

WHEREAS, Chief Powell and his wife reside in Aurora and are proud parents and grandparents; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Chief Bill Powell on his retirement and wish him the best in his future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Chief Bill Powell as a symbol of our respect.
