HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Verda L.
4 Dierzen of Woodstock, who passed away on April 5, 2008; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Verda L. Dierzen was born on February 21, 1917 in
6 Woodstock; her parents were Oscar A. and Violet (Ainger)
7 Anderson; she married Lawrence Dierzen on June 6, 1941 in
8 Woodstock; he passed away on August 19, 1996; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Verda L. Dierzen began her formal schooling at
10 Charles School on Greenwood Road before graduating from
11 Woodstock High School in 1934; she then attended Northern
12 Illinois University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science
13 degree in education; she earned her master's degree at the
14 University of Chicago in education administration in 1951; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Verda L. Dierzen had a long and distinguished
16 career in education; she began her career in 1936 at Greenwood
17 School, where she served as a teacher, principal, and
18 curriculum coordinator; after earning her teaching degree in
19 1945, she was asked to serve as Assistant County
20 Superintendent; in 1950, she went back to the classroom,
21 initiating kindergarten programs at both Greenwood and
22 Westwood Schools; and

1     WHEREAS, Following the birth of her son James, Verda L.
2 Dierzen returned to work in 1951 as a mathematics and home arts
3 teacher at Westwood Junior High; she then served as the
4 school's principal from 1952 until 1958; in 1958, following her
5 tenure at Westwood Junior High, she went on to become the
6 curriculum coordinator and then assistant superintendent of
7 instruction and transportation for Woodstock Rural District
8 10; and
 
9     WHEREAS, In 1967, Verda L. Dierzen became the
10 superintendent of District 10, where she worked for the
11 successful consolidation of Elementary School Districts 10 and
12 72 and High School District 152; upon the completion of the
13 merger in 1969, she became the assistant superintendent of the
14 new Woodstock Community Unit School District 200; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Verda L. Dierzen retired from School District 200
16 in 1972, marking the end of an illustrious 45 year career;
17 after her retirement, she served as an educational consultant
18 for SEDOM for nine years, as public relations director for the
19 McHenry County Retired Teachers Association, and as memorial
20 chairman for the McHenry County American Heart Association; and
 
21     WHEREAS, In recognition of Verda L. Dierzen's
22 contributions to the district, the Early Learning Center in

1 District 200 in Woodstock was named after her; and
 
2     WHEREAS, Verda L. Dierzen was a life member of the Illinois
3 Education Association and the National Education Association;
4 she was a charter member of the Woodstock chapter of Delta
5 Kappa Gamma Teachers Society and continued as an active member
6 of the group for over fifty years; she was also involved with
7 both the Illinois and McHenry Country Retired Teachers
8 Association; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Verda L. Dierzen enjoyed reading, sewing, and
10 crafts; she also enjoyed spending time with her faithful
11 companion, Dusty; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Verda L. Dierzen was preceded in death by her
13 husband and her parents; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Verda L. Dierzen is survived by her son, James
15 (Stefany) Dierzen; her brother, Clayton (Doris) Anderson; her
16 grandchildren, Jennifer (John) Midgette, Robert L. Dierzen,
17 Bhianca Herrera, and Dieby Herrera; her nieces, Suanne (Dale)
18 Habbley and Susan Anderson; her great-nieces and
19 great-nephews, Michael (Jeannine) Anderson, Elizabeth (Scott)
20 Voigt, Amy (Michael) Kueht, and Andrew Habbley; and her
21 great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Savannah, and Samuel Midgette;
22 therefore, be it

1     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
3 mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Verda
4 L. Dierzen; and be it further
 
5     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6 presented to the family of Verda L. Dierzen as an expression of
7 our sympathy.
