HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has
3 declined to release a report about health problems near
4 contaminated sites around the Great Lakes; and
 
5     WHEREAS, The group that commissioned the report, the
6 International Joint Commission, has called for its release, as
7 have 2 congressional committees and individuals associated
8 with the authorship and review of the report; and
 
9     WHEREAS, The report's author, Christopher De Rosa, was
10 demoted from his position as the director of the division of
11 toxicology and environmental medicine at the Agency for Toxic
12 Substances and Disease Registry, a unit of the Centers for
13 Disease Control and Prevention, after raising health questions
14 in the study; and
 
15     WHEREAS, The report was drafted over several years and
16 points out severe health issues within a few miles of 25 known
17 areas of concern around the lakes; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Of the 108 hazardous waste sites in those areas,
19 71 had a potential human health impact, according to a draft of
20 the report made available by the Center for Public Integrity;
21 and

1     WHEREAS, The report calls for further investifation of
2 adverse health effects in the areas with the most overlap
3 between health hazards, health problems, and at-risk
4 populations, including reproductive-age women, the elderly,
5 and children younger than 6 years old; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The study, entitled "Public Health Implications
7 of Hazardous Substances in the Twenty-Six U.S. Great Lakes
8 Areas of Concern" began in 2001 and was completed in July 2007
9 after several rounds of scientific peer review; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Senior scientists at the Centers for Disease
11 Control and Prevention blocked the report's publication while
12 they review it because of questions concerning the underlying
13 data raised a few weeks before its intended release to the
14 public; therefore, be it
 
15     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
16 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
17 urge the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to release
18 its report about health problems near contaminated sites around
19 the Great Lakes to the public; and be it further
 
20     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be sent to the
21 congressional delegation from Illinois and Dr. Julie Louise
