HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Dr. Alan Chapman on his retirement as McLean County Unit District 5 Superintendent; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Alan Chapman attended Oakdale Elementary, Central School, and Chiddix Junior High School; he graduated from Normal Community High School in 1965; he attended the University of Illinois, graduating with a B.A. in the Teaching of Social Studies in 1969; he began his professional career in Unit 5 at Chiddix Junior High School, teaching 7th and 8th grade social studies and sponsoring the Social Studies Club and Student Council; after that school year, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served two years; and

WHEREAS, He returned in 1972 and was assigned to teach U.S. and World History and coach Varsity Tennis at Normal Community High School; in 1975 he earned his Master of Science degree in Education from Illinois State University; he was appointed Dean of Students at NCHS in 1973; he moved back to Chiddix as Assistant Principal in 1982 and then to Parkside Junior High School as Principal in 1988; he earned his Doctor of Education degree from ISU in 1984; he returned to NCHS as Principal in 1990, where he remained until his retirement in 2002; and

WHEREAS, After 18 months of retirement, during which he did some part-time supervision of graduate students at ISU, Dr. Alan Chapman was appointed Interim Superintendent of Unit 5 effective January 5, 2004; on August 10, 2004, he was named Superintendent through June 30, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Alan Chapman is a member of the Illinois State Deans Association, the Illinois Principals Association, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the Illinois Association of School Administrators, and the American Association of School Administrators; he served as Corn Belt Region Director for the Illinois Principals Association, represented Division 5 on the Board of Directors of the Illinois High School Association, and is a past president of the Illinois State Deans Association; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Alan Chapman is a member of the Normal Rotary Club; he serves on the United Way of McLean County Campaign Cabinet, the Easter Seals Steering Cabinet, and the Economic Development Council of McLean County; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Alan Chapman is married to Kathie, who retired in 2005 after teaching 3rd grade at Colene Hoose Elementary School in Normal for 17 years; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Dr. Alan Chapman on his retirement and wish him continued success and happiness in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Alan Chapman as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
