SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:

625 ILCS 5/7-620 new

Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Provides that, in addition to any other fine or penalty, a law enforcement official may impound the motor vehicle of any person operating that vehicle without insurance. Requires the Secretary of State to establish and maintain a database of all motor vehicles determined by the Secretary to be uninsured and requires that this database be available to federal, state, and local law-enforcement agencies.

AN ACT concerning vehicles.

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, represented in the General Assembly:

Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding Sections 7-615 and 7-620 as follows:

(625 ILCS 5/7-615 new)

Sec. 7-615. Impounding uninsured vehicles. In addition to any other fine or penalty under this Code, a law enforcement official may impound the motor vehicle of any person operating that vehicle in violation of subsection (a) of Section 7-601.

(625 ILCS 5/7-620 new)

Sec. 7-620. Uninsured motorist database. The Secretary of State shall establish and maintain a database of all motor vehicles determined by the Secretary to be in violation of Section 7-601 of this Code. This database must be available to federal, state, and local law-enforcement agencies.
