SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of Mary Shirley Baumann of Naperville on Thursday, September 28, 2006; and

WHEREAS, She was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on October 18, 1928, to Gustave and Mary Flannery Berglund; she attended Beverly Hills High School in California; she graduated from Ursuline Academy in St. Louis and then attended Washington University on a part-time basis; and

WHEREAS, She was united in marriage to Robert W. Baumann in 1955 at Notre Dame in the Log Chapel; they moved to the Chicago area in 1960, settling in Naperville in 1965, where she was active in the Naperville Woman's Club for nearly 40 years; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Baumann was instrumental behind the scenes in the development and support of Naperville Settlement and the Naperville Art League; she was also an active member of the Naperville Heritage Society for many years; she was a past president of the Naperville Woman's Club and was co-chairman of the Woman's Club Art Fair for many years, and today it is the longest-continuously running art fair in Illinois; she worked to keep the Art Fair from becoming a craft fair and assembled a jury of judges who gave awards to local artists; and

WHEREAS, Shirley and her late husband had the shared priority of educating their children; all eight received college degrees, and many pursued advanced degrees; Mrs. Baumann graduated from the Institute for Management at Benedictine University in 1982; and

WHEREAS, Her enduring Catholic faith was an integral part of her life and an example to her family; she was a Sts. Peter and Paul parishioner; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Mary Shirley Baumann has been deeply felt by many, especially her children and their spouses, Margaret (Dennis Beedle), Catherine (Robert Baima), Olivia (Robin) Lauezzari, Mary (Michael) Jawor, Robert (Laura), Oliver (Ann-Marie), Alice (James Katovich), and Rosemarie (Michael) Mendrys; her many cherished grandchildren and step-grandchildren; her brother, Brian Berglund; and her faithful dog, Heidi; she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her sister, Audrey (the late Raymond) Kannapell; and her nephew, William Flannery Berglund; she was also a beloved and respected Aunt "Babe"; and a dear friend to many; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Mary Shirley Baumann, and we extend our sincere condolences to her family, her friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to her family as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
