SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with sadness of the death of the Reverend Abraham Byrd
4 of St. Louis on Thursday, February 3, 2005; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Pastor of St. James Baptist Church of Alton,
6 Reverend Byrd was one of 13 children of Arthur and Carrie
7 (Cutliff) Byrd; he was born December 26, 1915, in Stonewall,
8 Louisiana; and
 
9     WHEREAS, He married the former Dorothy Dooley in Pittsburg,
10 Texas; and
 
11     WHEREAS, Reverend Byrd retired as manager of the bookstore
12 at Washington University; he attended Eden Seminary in Webster
13 Groves and was ordained on May 17, 1953; he served as pastor of
14 Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Robertsville, Missouri, for 17
15 years and had been at St. James for the past 33 years; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Active in the community, he was a member of the
17 Alton Area Ministerial Alliance and a board member of the Alton
18 Mental Health, Family Services, and Visiting Nurse
19 Association, the Salvation Army, and St. Clare's Hospital, and
20 he was active with other community agencies; and
 
21     WHEREAS, The passing of Reverend Abraham Byrd has been
22 deeply felt by many, especially his wife, Dorothy; his son,
23 Eddie Byrd, and his wife, Della; his grandchildren, Brian Byrd
24 and his wife, Joy, and Kelly and Brandon Byrd; and his
25 great-grandsons, Simon and Devon Byrd; he was preceded in death
26 by his parents and 12 siblings; therefore, be it
 
27     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
28 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
29 Reverend Abraham Byrd, and we extend our sincere condolences to

1 his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
2 further
 
3     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
5 sympathy.
