SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of Manzili Jerome Davis on April 18, 2006; and

WHEREAS, He was born on July 2, 1984, in Gary, Indiana, to Roella Christine Henderson Davis and Jerome Matthew Davis; he was the adored younger brother of his sisters, Malaika Henderson and Johari Davis; and

WHEREAS, He was educated at St. Bride's Elementary School and Mt. Carmel High School, where he was salutatorian of his graduating class, and a member of the scholastic bowl, debate, math competition, and cross country teams; he was also a member of the Forensic Society and the National Honor Society, which he served as president for one year; and

WHEREAS, During his time at Mt. Carmel High School, he was involved with the Link Unlimited organization, which provided support systems for African American students in urban areas of Chicago; and

WHEREAS, He went on to study at Princeton University in the Department of Politics and planned on becoming a lawyer; at Princeton, he was involved in the Whig-Cliosophic Society and was a founding member of the Pre-Law Society, which he served as president his sophomore year; he was also a peer academic advisor; and

WHEREAS, He was a quiet person who captured the hearts of those whose lives he touched; he had a sudden wit and an acute intellect; he loved music, intelligent books, and movies that were finely crafted, including foreign and independent films that challenged his independent mind; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Manzili Jerome Davis has been deeply felt by many, especially his mother and father; his uncles, Jack and Merlin (Darlene) Henderson; his sisters; and his nieces, nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Manzili Jerome Davis, and we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to his family as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
