SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with regret of the death of Dr. Melvin E. "Doc"
4 Schulmeister of Alton on Saturday, April 8, 2006; and
 
5     WHEREAS, He was born on September 14, 1922, in Staunton to
6 Otto G. and Anna M. (Holeschek) Schulmeister; he graduated from
7 Staunton High School and continued his education at Monmouth
8 College, which was interrupted by World War II; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Dr. Schulmeister valiantly served his country as a
10 member of the U.S. Navy during World War II; during his service
11 he continued working on his accounting degree at Columbis
12 College and DePauw University, finally graduating from
13 Monmouth College in 1947; he was a member of the Alpha Tau
14 Omega Fraternity; at the end of his active service, he remained
15 in the Naval Reserves until August 1, 1950, as a lieutenant; he
16 was honorably discharged in 1954, with the following medals
17 awarded: World War II Victory Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon,
18 and the European-African Campaign Medal with Star Device; and
 
19     WHEREAS, He graduated from St. Louis University Dental
20 School in 1951, specializing in oral surgery; he opened his
21 dental practice on Elm Street in Alton and eventually moved his
22 practice to State Street, where he practiced for a total of 52
23 years; and
 
24     WHEREAS, Dr. Schulmeister was very active in the community;
25 he received the Paul Harris Award for his outstanding
26 contributions to the Alton-Godfrey Rotary Club; he was a member
27 of the Alton Garden Club and developed his own azalea; he was a
28 lifetime member of the VFW Post 1308, the Eagles, and the
29 Alton-Wood River Sportsman's Club; he was a charter member and
30 president of the St. Louis Dental Research Group for more than
31 40 years and was past president of the Madison County District

1 Dental Society; and
 
2     WHEREAS, He had a love of big band era music and was an
3 accomplished trumpet player and played his way through dental
4 school; "Doc" was an avid fan and recruiter for the University
5 of Illinois football team and served on their athletic board,
6 receiving many awards for his contributions; he was an avid
7 golfer and later in life enjoyed his three Labrador retrievers,
8 Ebony, Ivory, and Coco; and
 
9     WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Schulmeister has been deeply
10 felt by many, especially his wife, Bea E. (Wiseman)
11 Schulmeister; his daughters, Melinda Jane Schulmeister, Dr.
12 Jody Schulmeister and her husband, Dr. Larry Newquist, and
13 Julie Russell and her husband, Dr. Trent Russell; his
14 stepchildren and their spouses, Major Steve and Lisa McGaughey
15 and Mia and Darrel Solomon; his grandchildren, Lindsay, Laura,
16 and Leah McGaughey, Larry and Corbin Newquist, and Parker,
17 Grant, Hunter, Forrest, and Lane Russell; and his
18 stepparents-in-law, Bernice and Ed Palmer; in addition to his
19 parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Rose Marie
20 (Eisman) Schulmeister; therefore, be it
 
21     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
22 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
23 Dr. Melvin E. "Doc" Schulmeister, and we extend our sincere
24 condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
25 him; and be it further
 
26     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
27 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
28 sympathy.
