SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of Sam Filippo of Waukegan on Tuesday, November 22, 2005; and

WHEREAS, He was born on September 7, 1923, in Chicago; he graduated from Fenger High School, class of 1940, and was a member of the 1939 Chicago City Champion Football Team; he received his B.A. and M.A. in English from DePaul University; and

WHEREAS, He married Adeline (nee Rizzolo) on October 8, 1944; he played professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians and football; he enlisted in the United States Army after Pearl Harbor and was assigned to the anti-aircraft artillery; he served in combat at Dutch Harbor, Aleutian Islands, during the only enemy ground assault on U.S. soil and served in combat in Europe during 1944-1945; and

WHEREAS, He was a scholar, athlete, devoted husband and father, and a public servant; he was an English teacher and Assistant Principal at Waukegan Township High School, beginning in 1952, and was Athletic Director and Assistant Principal at Deerfield-Highland Park School District until his retirement; he served the City of Waukegan for 24 years as City Treasurer and City Clerk; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Sam Filippo has been deeply felt by many, especially by his wife of 61 years, Adeline (nee Rizzolo); his children, Sam Filippo, Marie Ryan, Tina (Terry) O'Malie, and Anthony (Julie) Filippo; his grandchildren, Matt and Marissa Filippo, Nicole (Chad) Ryan-Brown, Jeremiah Ryan, Katherine, Tony, and Gina Filippo, and Hank and Sam O'Malie; and his sister, Rea Albarello; he was preceded in death by his parents, Antonio and Mary Filippo; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Sam Filippo, and we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to him family as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
