SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois
3 learned with regret of the death of John Cotton of Naperville
4 on Tuesday, October 18, 2005; and
 
5     WHEREAS, John Cotton grew up in Joliet, the ninth of 10
6 children; He graduated from Lockport High School in 1976 and,
7 after working a few years, attended DePaul University, where he
8 earned his bachelor's degree in accounting; he worked for many
9 years as an auditor and staff accountant at Continental Bank
10 and Coopers & Lybrand in Chicago; and
 
11     WHEREAS, In 1980, John Cotton married Judy Schutter, the
12 mother of his son, Joe; they divorced more than a decade later;
13 he and his wife, Lisa Ann, were married in 2000; Lisa teaches
14 at Naperville North High School; and
 
15     WHEREAS, John Cotton received his master's degree and his
16 teaching certificate from Northern Illinois University; he
17 began teaching business education at Naperville Central High
18 School in August 1998; he taught consumer education, applied
19 mathematics, keyboarding, and Web page design; he also coached
20 the consumer education LifeSmarts team, guiding them to a State
21 championship, and started Central's first bowling club; he was
22 dedicated to his students and wanted to give back to his
23 community; and
 
24     WHEREAS, John Cotton was active in the Naperville Community
25 Unit School District 203 teachers' union, the Naperville Unit
26 Education Association, where he most recently served as second
27 vice president and grievance chair; he also was working towards
28 a second master's degree from North Central College in
29 Naperville; and
 
30     WHEREAS, A few years ago, John Cotton embraced his inner

1 biker and began riding the open roads of western Illinois on
2 his beloved 100th anniversary Harley-Davidson with his wife and
3 friends; one of the last trips he took was to his childhood
4 home in Joliet; and
 
5     WHEREAS, The passing of John Cotton has been deeply felt by
6 many, especially his wife, Lisa; his son, Joe; his father,
7 Loren; his brother, Larry; his sisters, Rita Erickson, Carol
8 Surges, Nancy Sanders, Linda Cave, Melody Ongenae, and Kitty
9 Storm; and his stepchildren, Justin, Angelica, and Charlie
10 Biller; and many friends and students; therefore, be it
 
11     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL
12 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
13 John Cotton, and we extend our sincere condolences to his
14 family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
15 further
 
16     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
17 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
18 sympathy.
